Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: In the mid 1990s, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) designated UW-CTRI as the lead national organization to prepare the Smoking Cessation Clinical Guideline with Dr. Michael Fiore serving as the Clinical Guideline Panel Chair and Dr. Tim Baker serving as the Senior Scientific Advisor. The original Smoking Cessation Clinical Practice Guideline was released in April 1996. After the publication of the original Guideline, a wealth of new research in the field of tobacco cessation occurred. As a result, in 1998, a consortium consisting of AHRQ, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the National Cancer Institute, the Office on Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and UW-CTRI came together to publish an updated version of the Guideline. UW-CTRI was chosen to be the lead organization in directing the Update Project, with the expert panel reassembled and Drs. Fiore and Baker reprising the roles they had with the original Guideline Project. The Updated Guideline, Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, was released June 27, 2000. Since that time a great number of materials have been created to help healthcare providers and other implement guideline recommendations. To access the full
