Instructors

Bruce Christiansen, PhD, Dr. Christiansen is a senior scientist at the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI). A licensed psychologist, his clinical and research interests include addressing the tobacco use by populations that bear a disproportionate burden from tobacco related illnesses.  In particular his work focuses on low income smokers and smokers who have a mental illness or other substance abuse disorder.  He has been part of the Wisconsin Nicotine Treatment Integration Project (WiNTiP) since its inception. 

Roger Dier, MS, is the UW-CTRI Outreach Specialist for the eastern and south central regions of Wisconsin. Based in Oshkosh, Roger has assisted Wisconsin healthcare organizations with improving their standard of care for treating patients who smoke or chew tobacco. He has worked closely with several health care organizations, including Aurora Health Care, Prevea Health, Holy Family Memorial Hospitals and Clinics in the Community Memorial Hospital system, Meriter Medical Group, Physicians Plus, UW Hospitals and Clinics, Divine Savior Healthcare, county health departments, technical colleges and dentists across his regions. During the course of his ten-year career with the UW-CTRI, Roger emerged as a leader in statewide smokeless tobacco cessation efforts. In 2008, Dier was the first-ever recipient of the Amy Hertz Advocacy Award at the National Summit on Spit and Smokeless Tobacco. The award, named after the Deputy Attorney General for the State of California, honors an individual or organization exemplifying outstanding advocacy and education in smokeless-tobacco prevention and control.

Kristine Hayden, BS, is the Western Region Outreach Specialist with UW-CTRI and works out of Eau Claire, Wis. She utilizes organizational, networking, and educational skills to promote tobacco treatment and effective intervention strategies with providers, clinical systems, healthcare organizations, and hospitals.  Kris provides the latest evidence-based tobacco dependence and treatment research through training and individualized technical assistance for medical and dental providers, college and public health clinicians, treatment providers, and human service professionals throughout western Wisconsin. 

Eric Heiligenstein, MD, is Director of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin Health Services. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and an Associate of the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention. Dr. Heiligenstein specializes in the overlap between tobacco use and psychiatric/substance use disorders. As a member of the Wisconsin Tobacco Advisory Board, Medical Director of the Wisconsin Nicotine Treatment Intervention Project, and other expert advisory panels, he is actively involved at the state and national level in integrating tobacco prevention and intervention into mental health and AODA practices.

Susanne Morris, BS, Susanne is the Northern Region Outreach Specialist at the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention, providing services out of her office in Rhinelander.  She provides training and technical assistance to healthcare systems, clinics, hospitals, dental practices, and others on how to implement best practices for treating tobacco dependence.  Susanne has worked with local mental health and substance use providers, helping them integrate the clinical practice guidelines for tobacco treatment into standard care and successfully intervene with their patients that use tobacco. 

Don Pirozzoli, MS, is a Technical Assistance Coordinator with the Grassroots Empowerment Project (GEP). In this role Don works with 6 consumer run recovery/drop in centers in WI to assist them in growing and developing as organizations. He was recently appointed to the Governor’s Mental Health Council and has been in the cross disability field since 2003. He has worked at the Independent Living Council of WI, NAMI WI and as advocacy director for the largest independent living center in Florida.  Don is also formally trained as a grassroots organizer. Prior to his work in the cross disability field Don worked for 15 years as an educator and trainer.
