Learning Objectives

 By the end of the day, attendees will know:

  1. Conceptual guiding models: the Phase-Based model of quitting, general evidence-based practice recommendations, and recommendations for the primary care setting.

  2. How to use the seven FDA-approved smoking cessation medications.

  3. How to bring up the topic of tobacco use regardless of presenting complaint and build relevance for quitting as a treatment goal.

  4. How to assess for motivation to quit.

  5. A strategy to increase motivation to quit when it is lacking.

  6. What resources are available to help the motivated to quit, especially the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line and how to become a “fax to quit site”.

  7. How to apply the Phase-Based model and evidence based treatment to develop and implement a quitting treatment plan.

  8. Special considerations when working with individuals with significant and severe mental illness such as the effect of tobacco use on metabolism of medications as well as the special challenges faced by these individuals.

  9. Opportunities for additional training.
