Counselors Learn How to Help Patients Quit Smoking, Drinking &/or Drugs All at Once

About 40 professionals in the field of alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) attended an event sponsored by the Wisconsin Nicotine and Tobacco Integration Project (WiNTiP) at the Kalahari Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells. David “Mac” Macmaster, WiNTiP advisor, spoke about the similarities between alcohol and nicotine dependence, and why it’s so important to address all addictions at once.

Dr. Eric Heiligenstein spoke about his treatment approach to helping patients with nicotine and co-occurring addictions to quit tobacco use. He discussed medications that work well—or don’t—for his patients.

A panel consisting of Heiligenstein and UW-CTRI Regional Outreach Specialists Roger Dier, Kris Hayden, and Susanne Morris answered practical questions on implementing tobacco treatment in clinics and other settings.

Outreach Director Robert Adsit and WiNTiP Coordinator Bruce Christiansen also provided insight on everything from the Quit Line to research that shows most AODA patients want to quit tobacco use, and many are successful. In fact, Bruce said, those who quit smoking are more likely to avoid relapses to other drugs. For information on similar WiNTiP events this fall, click here.
