Lezli Redmond, MPH,
Assistant Director for Intervention Programs

Lezli Redmond is responsible for developing, managing, and evaluating UW-CTRI's statewide education and outreach programs designed to promote smoking cessation. The program she oversees includes training and technical assistance for healthcare providers, the operation and promotion of the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line, and the development of various other statewide initiatives, funded by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, aimed at encouraging treatment of tobacco dependence.

Redmond has been named as a 2009 Champion in Women’s Health by the Wisconsin Women's Health Foundation. Champions in Women's Health awards are given to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in improving the quality of life for Wisconsin women and families in the following health areas: cancer, cardiovascular disease, domestic abuse, mental illness, osteoporosis, tobacco and alcohol use, rural women's health and general women's health.

“I recognize Lezli as a visionary health leader and a true advocate for the people of Wisconsin,” said Sue Ann Thompson, founder and president of the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation (WWHF). “Lezli has committed herself to educating, training and engaging a variety of key organizations and individuals in our state in building productive partnerships and collaborative efforts. I am proud to call her my colleague, friend, and ally in our efforts to improve the lives of Wisconsin families.”

Redmond has also been named the winner of the 2009 UW Regents' Award for Excellence. Redmond, who has worked for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health for the past 17 years, was selected from nominations of non‑instructional academic staff members who work at one of the UW System’s 13 universities, 13 freshmen-sophomore campuses or one of the UW-Extension programs. In all, the UW System employs more than 32,000 faculty and staff statewide.

Redmond worked with UW-CTRI colleagues to create and develop the UW-CTRI Outreach Program, consisting of academic detailing by outreach specialists working from the state’s regional health department offices. The specialists provide training and technical assistance to clinicians, healthcare systems, community clinics and other agencies throughout the state. In its first three years of operation, the program has provided service to over 10,000 individuals and 5000 groups.

Redmond also was a leader in establishing the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line service in Wisconsin. The Quit Line provides free, individualized smoking cessation counseling to anyone anywhere in the state of Wisconsin. Since 2001, more than 128,000 callers have contacted the Quit Line for help. She also started the Fax to Quit program which allows healthcare providers to work with the Quit Line to initiate calls to potential quitters.

Before coming to UW-CTRI, Redmond served as the Project Director for the Women's Health Initiative, sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Medical School through the National Institutes of Health. She has served as a Research Program Manager for the UW Health Emotions Institute. She received her bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her masters in public health from Hunter College in New York City.
