“It will have a tremendous impact on the way pediatricians across the country treat tobacco use, and advocate for policy changes,” Sims said. The November issue of Pediatrics features the new statement. It includes three overarching principles:
AAP’s new policy was three years in the making and includes nine main recommendations, from which even more detailed recommendations build. The tenets address personal and professional behavior as well as clinical practices. There are also recommendations to government and policymakers, including public actions needed to eliminate secondhand-smoke exposure, support prevention and treatment of tobacco use and dependence, support control of tobacco-product distribution and expand research.
