UW-CTRI Researcher Co-Authors New Pediatrics Policy
UW-CTRI Researcher Dr. Tammy Sims was the co-author of a new tobacco-use policy for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The policy notes that pediatricians are uniquely positioned to assist patients and families with prevention and treatment of tobacco use. AAP announced the new policy at the academy’s national conference and exhibition Oct. 17-20 in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Sims participated in a news conference along with Dr. Dana Best, her policy co-author and AAP President Dr. David Tayloe. Sims spoke with a writer of AAP News, and will do a radio interview with Health Radio for broadcast on Nov. 11. |

“It will have a tremendous impact on the way pediatricians across the country treat tobacco use, and advocate for policy changes,” Sims said.
The November issue of Pediatrics features the new statement. It includes three overarching principles:
- There is no safe way to use tobacco.
- There is no safe level or duration of exposure to secondhand smoke.
- The financial and political power of individuals and organizations should be used to support tobacco control and eliminate tobacco use.
AAP’s new policy was three years in the making and includes nine main recommendations, from which even more detailed recommendations build. The tenets address personal and professional behavior as well as clinical practices. There are also recommendations to government and policymakers, including public actions needed to eliminate secondhand-smoke exposure, support prevention and treatment of tobacco use and dependence, support control of tobacco-product distribution and expand research.
The AAP has 60,000 members nationwide and is an official endorsing entity of the 2008 PHS Guideline Update.
