Two UW-CTRI researchers contributed to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, “Scientific Standards for Studies on Modified Risk Tobacco Products.” This report provides advice to the FDA on the minimum standards for scientific studies to allow the marketing of modified risk tobacco products, and for post-market studies of marketed products, as described in section 911 of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009. The panel urges rigorous standards for allowing any product to be listed as reduced harm or risk.
UW-CTRI's Tim Baker and Wendy Theobald contributed. Baker was one of 16 members on the committee that attended multiple in-person meetings, heard testimony, did background research and contributed to the writing of the report. Theobald helped with literature research, editing and preparation of literature citations. She is formally thanked in the preface to the report.
