UW-CTRI Study Helps Patient Quit Smoking
When attempting to quit smoking, Larry Long tried everything from hypnosis to cold turkey. However, he found no success quitting smoking until he participated in the Wisconsin Smokers’ Health Study and got back-up support from the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line.
“The (study) program, from first thing in the morning to the last thing at night, was very beneficial to get over the first part of quitting. Between the physical, the stress test, the psychological testing as well as testing the response time between the pictures—everything was excellent. It was absolutely excellent.”
After beginning his addiction in his college years when “everyone smoked,” he ended it 40 years later for the exact opposite reason. “It reached the point where none of our friends smoked. I felt isolated, so I thought it was just time since everyone else stopped smoking.” |

Now the Madison resident saves money. He spends his time on the treadmill, elliptical machine and lifting weights—all with much more ease. Long doesn’t hesitate to recommend the Quit Line to a friend. “I would recommend the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line to anyone. Also, if there are any other programs that Dr. Michael Fiore has developed, I recommend those too.”
