UW-CTRI Partners with ProHealth Care to Help Patients Quit Smoking

ProHealth Care in Waukesha has finalized a contract with UW-CTRI to help its outreach nurses—and several Waukesha-area community organizations with which ProHealth Care works—to identify and intervene with tobacco users. Roger Dier will spend 40 percent of his time through mid-April 2012 working with ProHealth Care, the Salvation Army, the Hispanic Resource Center and other community organizations.

Dier will teach providers how to offer basic tobacco dependence treatment based on the Clinical Practice Guideline. He’ll train on how to use motivational interviewing to encourage smokers to give quitting a chance. The work is part of a ProHealth Care/ NCI-funded Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) grant.
