Major Focus Areas for the 2008 Guideline Update

The Guideline panel closely reviewed thousands of journal articles and selected the following primary topics to update in the 2008 edition:

1. Telephone quit lines

2. Combining counseling and medication relative to either counseling or medication

3. Varenicline

4. Medication combinations

5. Long-term effectiveness of medication

6. Smokers with low socio-economic status/limited formal education

Telephone quit lines are one focus area for the 2008 guideline update.

7. Adolescent smokers

8. Pregnant smokers

9. Psychiatric illness and/or non-tobacco chemical dependencies

10. Providing cessation interventions as a health benefit

11. Systems interventions, including provider training and the combination of training and systems interventions
