Clinical
Trials: New Medication
Because of an increased national interest in new medications
to treat tobacco dependence, UW-CTRI has recently conducted
clinical trials for new medications.
Selegiline
UW-CTRI is testing a new stop-smoking medicine, selegiline, in the form of a patch. For more information, click here.
Nicotine Vaccine
UW-CTRI is currently testing the efficacy of this vaccine, designed to attach to nicotine molecules in tobacco products and prevent their absorption
by the brain.
Varenicline
This new
prescription medication, marketed as "Chantix," was approved by the FDA to help patients quit smoking. Varenicline acts on nicotine receptors with two types of action:
- It blocks some of the rewarding effects of nicotine.
- At the same time, it stimulates the receptors in a way that reduces withdrawal.
UW-CTRI is currently one of several research sites across the world testing the safety of this medication for patients with cardiovascular diagnoses. For more information on varenicline, click here.
