Study Participants
Researchers are recruiting daily smokers at least 18 years old who are motivated to quit and willing to cooperate with study procedures.  UW-CTRI plans to recruit approximately 75 people from Milwaukee and the surrounding area.

Study Content
All participants will receive individual counseling based on the Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. Participants will receive the study medicine or placebo.  All participants will receive treatment for eight weeks. All counseling, study medication and assessments will be provided at no cost to participants.  Participants will also receive a study physical at no cost.
The Medication
The study medicine, selegiline, is FDA-approved for treating depression, but has not been used to treat smoking.  It will be administered as a patch.

Study Requirements
Participants will be asked to attend 14 visits over a six-month period.  They will be followed up for a total of six months. Participants will receive a small payment to cover the time and expense of making clinic visits during the study.

The study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI), UW School of Medicine and Public Health.
